Three ways to finish a floor

The same base coat looks completely different depending on what you broadcast into it and how much.

Gloved hand broadcasting black, white and blue flakes onto a wet gray epoxy base coat in a garage

Partial flake broadcast

Flakes scattered across the base color. Lighter texture, less material, and the base coat stays part of the look.

Full-broadcast flake epoxy garage floor in black, white, gray and tan chips

Full flake broadcast

Flakes cover the base completely for a granite-like floor. More texture for grip, and it hides imperfections best.

Quartz broadcast

Fine colored quartz sand locked in resin. A dense, hard-wearing, slip-resistant surface built for wet and heavy-use areas.

Flake or quartz?

Both lock into the base coat and get sealed under a clear topcoat. The difference is what the floor has to put up with.

How a broadcast floor performs

  • Resists water, de-icing salt, and petrochemicals
  • Impact and abrasion resistant
  • Slip resistant in wet or dry conditions
  • Resists hot tire pickup
  • Handles freeze/thaw and extreme heat
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Quick-install options for minimal downtime
  • Works on new construction and repaired slabs

Performance depends on the full system: surface prep, base coat, broadcast, and topcoat. See the technical data sheets for each product's specs, coverage, and cure times.

Flake and quartz questions

What's the difference between epoxy flakes and quartz?

Flakes are decorative vinyl chips that give the floor a speckled, granite-style look and hide small imperfections. Quartz is colored quartz sand that builds a harder, more slip-resistant surface for wet and heavy-use areas like commercial kitchens and restrooms.

Should I do a full or partial flake broadcast?

A full broadcast covers the base coat completely. It gives more texture, hides the most imperfections, and is the usual choice for garages. A partial broadcast uses fewer flakes and lets the base color show through, for a lighter look.

Do flakes make an epoxy floor less slippery?

Yes. Flakes add texture under the clear topcoat, which gives more grip than a smooth solid-color floor. For areas that are wet most of the time, quartz gives even more slip resistance.

How much flake do I need?

It depends on your square footage, chip size, and whether you're doing a full or partial broadcast. Call us with those three details and we'll tell you how much to pick up. Coverage rates are also listed on our technical data sheets.

Can I buy flakes and quartz without a full kit?

Yes. We sell flake and quartz on their own, by the bag or in bulk, for contractors and DIYers who are supplying their own base coat and topcoat. We also carry complete homeowner kits if you'd rather get everything in one box.
